English basement style homes to large corner houses
with ornamental wrought-iron railed balconies reminiscent

St. Paul's Church
/ Downtown Norfolk/ 757-627-4353 / The lone survivor
of the British assault upon the city in 1776, the
church exterior still holds a cannonball embedded
high up on its brick facade. The church was built
in 1739 and retains most of its Colonial period interior
with the exception of the beautiful addition of several
Tiffany stained glass windows. Donations appreciated.
Bacon's Castle /
Bacon Castle / Surry County / 757-357-5976 /
Bacon's Castle was built in 1665 by the Allen family
and is one of the earliest surviving homes in Virginia.
Details in the brickwork and triple chimney stacks,
along with its cruciform designed floor plan are
virtually extinct in this country. Rooms are furnished
in period antiques reflecting the different eras
the house witnessed. The house's unusual name derives
from a revolt that took place at this site between
followers of the then-deceased Nathaniel Bacon and
troops of the Governor of Virginia. Bacon probably
never visited or saw this house. $
