Local Legends

An hour west toward Williamsburg, you'll find some legendary courses that are well worth a day trip. You might want to leave the family to the pleasures of the beach or drop them off at Busch Gardens, then you can take the challenge of some more great golf.

The Colonial Golf Course, is claimed by Golf Digest as a "top ten Virginia public course". It has been ranked as high as number 2 in Virginia. Open year-round, this 18 hole, par 72 course is a traditional wooded layout featuring five boxed tees, offering a "fair but challenging experience" for all. (757) 566-1600

The Legends at Royal New Kent,
named the Best New Course of the Year at its debut, has continued to live up to the hype of its opening expectations. The Royal New Kent is acclaimed as the best imitation of an Irish course ever attempted on this side of the pond. Carry me Back to Ole Ireland! (888) 253-4363

The Legends at Stonehouse,
opening a year earlier (1996) than the Royal New Kent, this sibling also garnered the title of the Best New Course of the Year! The dramatic design of this Mike Strantz course is a pure work of art and has decidedly changed the way people talk about golf in Virginia! (888) 825-3436

Williamsburg National,
keeps "corralling" awards year after year! This Nicklaus Design Associates course has earned 3 1/2 stars from Golf Digest and was voted by their readers as one of the Top 10 Places to Play in Virginia! It's a Golden Bear filled with challenge blended within a natural eastern Virginia landscape...a truly superb layout with beautiful conditions! (757) 258-9642

Golden Horseshoe Golf Courses (757) 220-7696
The Gold Course
designed by Robert Trent Jones (he considered it his finest design), was carefully restored in 1998 by his son Rees Jones. In 1963 Jack Nicklaus shot a 67 which has held as the course record since that time. Try your luck on the gold, the crown jewel of Williamsburg golf and a top five in Virginia!

The Green Course, designed in 1991 by Rees Jones, and just like his father, he designed the course to take advantage of the natural landscape. In its opening year, Golf Digest ranked the Green as one of the ten best new resorts in the nation. The Green still stands as one of the top ten in Virginia!

Kingsmill Resort (757) 253-3906
The Plantation Course
was designed by Arnold Palmer as an ideal test of a player's ability. This par 72 favors accurate iron play and good putting. Watch for the par three 17th...you may never forget it!

The River Course is known as the home of the PGA Tour, Michelob Championship. A par 71, this course was designed by Pete Dye and challenges the player with its deep ravines, elevated greens and lurking water. See it like the pros do, take the River Course challenge!

The Woods Course designed by club pro Curtis Strange with Tom Clark, is one of Williamsburg's most challenging. Multi-tiered greens and wide fairways make for interesting play on this secluded par 72.
