The major north-south highway route through eastern
and central Virginia is I-95, which bisects
I-64 at Richmond. If you bypass downtown Richmond
using I-295 or go directly through town on I-95,
you would take I-64 east for a 2 1/2 hour trip to
the oceanfront at Virginia Beach. The main exit off
I-64 in Norfolk to the Beach was previously marked
as highway 44, the Virginia Beach Expressway, but
now has been brought into the Federal Interstate
Highway System and has been reassigned as I-264 east.
This road will take you directly to the oceanfront,
or if you wish to take advantage of other Virginia
Beach locales, exits are clearly marked for attractions.
I-264 west is the direct route into Downtown
Norfolk. The abutting city lines between these two
metropolitan areas runs close to parallel with the
I-64 within a mile of the I-264 east interchange.
I-85 from points southwest
out of Atlanta, Charlotte, and Raleigh,
merges with I-95 at Petersburg. Head north and catch
I-64 at Richmond, or go three miles south and catch
I-295, the eastern loop around Richmond. It will
connect you with I-64 east just east of the Richmond
Airport.
From I-95 south
coming from Savannah, Jacksonville and Miami,
exit onto at U.S. Route 58 east at Emporia, which
is a four lane highway that runs east through Franklin
and Suffolk that connects with I-664 at Bowers Hill
in Chesapeake. Follow the signs that will lead
you to the Virginia Beach I-64 I-264 interchange.
From the south,
access out of Elizabeth City in eastern North
Carolina to Virginia Beach is via U.S. Route 17 to
I-64 east at Deep Creek in Chesapeake.
From the south,
for access out of Ahoskie and New Bern
in eastern North Carolina to Virginia Beach take
U.S. Route 13, to U.S. Route 13 & 58 east in Suffolk
to I-664 and I-64 east connection at
Bowers Hill in Chesapeake.
From the south,
for access out of the Outer Banks area in
eastern North Carolina to Virginia Beach take Route
168 north to I-64 east at Great Bridge in Chesapeake.
You'll save 95 miles if you are driving directly
from the northeastern United
States, by taking U.S. Route 13 off I-95,
just south of Wilmington, Delaware. This direct route
from the north takes you across the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge Tunnel (U.S. Route 13) to Route 60, Shore
Drive.
When traveling around the Virginia
Beach-Norfolk metro area use I-64 and
follow the directional signage for your area of final
destination. Follow the specified radio directions
to avoid traffic tie-ups in the busy I-64, I-264
and I-664 corridor which forms a loop around the
entire Hampton Roads area. Flashing lights accompany
directional signs with radio frequency information
and color bars to assist you when problems occur
with traffic flow during peak drive times. (See
your specific Virginia Beach area hotel or attractions
map for more detailed I-264 exiting information.)
